This exhibition explores Henson’s unique contributions to the moving image, and how he and a talented team of designers, performers, and writers created an unparalleled body of work that continues to delight and inspire people of all ages. With his gently subversive humor, restless curiosity, and innovative approach to puppetry, Henson built the Muppets into an enduring international brand, contributed beloved puppet characters to Sesame Street, and made movies that applied his vivid imagination to stories for the big screen. Developed by Museum of the Moving Image (MoMI), this 5,000-square-foot, Muppet-filled multimedia exhibition is full of hundreds of objects, including puppets, character sketches, storyboards, scripts, costumes, and film and television clips. exhibitions/the-jim-henson-exhibition/įrom May through December 2023, the Maryland Center for History and Culture is hosting the traveling show The Jim Henson Exhibition: Imagination Unlimited. LAIKA has applied technical innovations to this time-honored art form, bringing stop-motion animation into the digital age. The unforgettable characters and stories featured in LAIKA’s films are made using stop-motion animation, with hand-crafted techniques that date from the emergence of cinema. The interactive animation section of the Museum’s core exhibition Behind the Screen will be reimagined with a special focus on the seminal and wildly popular work of LAIKA, the animation studio that created Coraline (2009), ParaNorman (2012), The Boxtrolls (2014), Kubo and the Two Strings (2016), and Missing Link (2019). The series is set many years before the story depicted by The Dark Crystal, and presents a greatly expanded world with many additional characters. The ten-part Netflix series, The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance pits Gelfling heroes against the nefarious Skeksis, as they attempt to save their world. Highlights include the Hunter Skeksis, the General Skeksis, a Fizzgig, and the All-Maudra and Seladon Gelflings, as well as a series of detailed maquettes, created by Toby Froud, which were used as models for the characters. The exhibit features a selection of concept art, maquettes, puppets, and behind-the-scenes images, tracing the collaboration between concept artist Brian Froud, who originated the world of Thra in The Dark Crystal, and Jim Henson’s Creature Shop, which built the puppets for the series. ![]() Savings for a family of four: almost $35.Creatures from the Land of Thra: Character Design for The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance explores the process of designing the fantastical characters for the new Netflix series, a prequel to the 1982 film co-directed by Jim Henson and Frank Oz.
